4.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Bali
A 4.5 magnitude earthquake shook multiple regions across Bali and Lombok, Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) on Sunday, 1 March at 11:50 WITA.
Cahyo Nugroho, Head of the Bali-based Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Office (BBMKG) Region III, stated that analysis by the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) confirmed the updated magnitude of the earthquake at 4.5.
“The epicentre was located at coordinates 9.33° S; 115.50 E, precisely positioned at sea approximately 63 kilometres south-east of South Kuta, Bali at a depth of 75 kilometres,” Cahyo said in a written statement on Sunday afternoon, 1 March.
He noted that given the epicentre’s location and hypocentric depth, the earthquake was classified as a medium-depth earthquake resulting from the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate beneath the Eurasian plate.
“Source mechanism analysis indicates that this earthquake features a thrust-fault or reverse-fault movement mechanism,” he added.
According to Cahyo, the earthquake’s impacts, based on shakemap estimations and public reports, resulted in shaking felt across Denpasar City, Badung Regency, Central Lombok Regency, West Lombok Regency and Mataram City.
Light tremors from the earthquake were also felt in Tabanan Regency, Gianyar Regency, East Lombok Regency, Sumbawa Regency and West Sumbawa Regency.
“As of the present time, no damage reports resulting from the earthquake have been received. As of 12:15 WITA, BMKG monitoring has detected no aftershock activity,” he stated.
