4,000 Scavengers at Bantargebang Registered for BPJS Employment

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has revealed that 4,000 scavengers at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) have been registered as participants of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan.

“There are 4,000 scavengers in Bantargebang whom we have registered. It has actually been in place since 2017,” Pramono said when met at the RDF Plant in Rorotan, North Jakarta, on Monday.

The protection is the result of collaboration between the Jakarta Provincial Government, the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Manpower.

Based on the latest data, the number of scavengers working in the Bantargebang area is estimated to be around 6,000 people. Pramono has therefore asked the Jakarta Environment Agency to collect data on the approximately 2,000 scavengers who have not yet received this protection.

“I will ask the Environment Agency to collect data, especially regarding the scavenger workers in Bantargebang. So we remain open to that,” Pramono said.

Under Government Regulation Number 50 of 2025, contributions for work accident insurance (JKK) and death insurance (JKM) for eligible workers receive a 50 percent reduction.

“Our friends get a 50 percent discount on work accident insurance and death insurance contributions. The original contribution was Rp16,800, so with a 50 percent discount it comes down to Rp8,400 per month,” said Yassierli.

He also expressed appreciation to the Jakarta Provincial Government for providing protection to some of the Bantargebang scavengers. The move is expected to serve as an example for other regional governments to expand social security protection for informal workers.
