4,000 Runners Set to Conquer the Extreme Arjuno-Welirang Route at Mantra116 Trail Run
The growing trend of running in Indonesia is boosting sport tourism as a driver of regional economic growth. Recognising this potential, the Mantra116 trail run is returning with the aim of not only presenting an international-standard competition but also strengthening the tourism and local economy sectors in the Arjuno-Welirang area, Pasuruan Regency, East Java. This aligns with the sport tourism development efforts continuously promoted by the Ministry of Tourism through various nature and sports-based events. Entering its 10th edition, Mantra116 will take place from 3 to 5 July 2026 at Kaliandra Resort, featuring six race categories ranging from 10 kilometres to the ultra-trail 116 kilometres, which crosses Mount Arjuno and Mount Welirang. Event Director Heru Prabowo stated that the organisers are prioritising participant safety and comfort amid the increasing number of runners. He explained that race start times have been deliberately staggered to prevent congestion on narrow sections of the course, and more visible markings have been added to dangerous stretches. According to Heru, improving the quality of the event is crucial to maintaining Mantra116’s reputation as one of Indonesia’s largest trail runs and strengthening its appeal to international runners. Enthusiasm for the event has surged, with participant numbers rising from approximately 2,700 in 2025 to around 4,000 this year. Beyond being a sporting event, Mantra116 makes a tangible contribution to the local economy. Last year’s event saw increased activity in the accommodation, local transport, and micro, small, and medium enterprise (UMKM) sectors. At least 20 UMKM tenants offered local culinary products and handicrafts, while the presence of thousands of participants and their families boosted hotel and homestay occupancy rates, transport services, and the local entertainment sector. With the increase in participants this year, organisers are optimistic that the economic turnover will exceed the IDR 7.3 billion recorded previously. The event has also gained international recognition, being listed on the International Trail Running Association (ITRA) calendar, which ensures participants’ results are recorded in an international database. It is also part of the UTMB Index scheme, opening opportunities for participants to compete in prestigious trail run competitions within the UTMB World Series network. As part of sport tourism development, organisers are encouraging participants to explore nearby destinations such as Lembah Kecubung Agro Tourism, Kakek Bodo Waterfall, and Lekok Beach, which can be visited with family before or after the race.
