3.9% of population in the city poor

JAKARTA (JP): An executive of the Jakarta office of the national family planning board said on Thursday that 3.9 percent of Jakartans are living below the poverty line.

"Most of the poor people are living in slum areas located in North Jakarta," said the official, Ukaidi Muslim.

Jakarta now has a population of 8.9 million people.

Ukaidi said the needy cannot afford to eat twice a day, do not have clothes for work, for school or for other occasions and do not have their own houses. (mas)
