3,855 firms violate labor regulations

JAKARTA (JP): Out of the 27,204 companies operating in Jakarta, 3,855 were found guilty last year of violating a host of labor regulations including minimum wages, overtime wages and social insurance.

Freddy P. Tuamelly, head of Jakarta office of the Ministry of Manpower, said yesterday that 3,831 of the 3,855 firms have been given strong warnings.

Three from the remainder were brought to court and have been penalized by the court with fines ranging from Rp 150,000 to Rp 750,000, he said.

Freddy was quoted by Antara as saying that his office will not tolerate any labor violations and will continue investigating their violations of existing laws.

He said that the number of accidents at the 27,204 companies, employing over 1.3 million workers, reached 1,810 cases last year.

"There were 138 strikes in 1994, involving 47,265 strikers, rendering 401,295 working hours ineffective," he said.

Freddy said the prospects and conditions of manpower affairs this year are projected to be about the same as last year with many strikes likely to happen.(hhr)
