374 inmates at Palembang Women's Prison receive general remission

A total of 374 inmates at the Class IIA Women’s Prison (Lapas) in Palembang, South Sumatra, received general remission (RU) for 2026 in conjunction with the 81st anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia.

Head of the Class IIA Women’s Prison in Palembang, Desi Andriyani, said on Tuesday that of the total recipients, four inmates received Remisi Umum II (RU-II) and were immediately released, while the other 370 received RU-I in the form of sentence reductions ranging from one to six months.

The granting of remission rights within the Palembang Women’s Prison is based on the fulfilment of administrative and substantive legal requirements, namely administrative conditions and having served a minimum of six months of their sentence.

In terms of the proportion of residents, 374 out of a total of 517 inmates at the Class IIA Women’s Prison in Palembang were declared entitled to receive sentence reductions.

Head of the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections for South Sumatra, Yulius Sahruzah, stressed that remission serves as state recognition as well as a stimulus for inmates to continue improving themselves. The success of the correctional system is measured by changes in inmates’ behaviour, turning them into productive members of society who do not repeat criminal offences.

One inmate who received RU-II and was immediately released, identified as MS, expressed gratitude for the remission received and committed to using the skills gained during rehabilitation to start a new life with her family.
