JAKARTA (ANTARA) — The East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Department (Sudin Gulkarmat) evacuated a 350kg sacrificial cow that fell into a culvert in the Kayu Putih area of Pulogadung, East Jakarta.

‘The incident involved a 350kg sacrificial cow belonging to Mr Suardi that fell into a culvert at Pulomas Utara 3, RT 001/RW 14, Kayu Putih Village, Pulogadung Subdistrict,’ said Abdul Wahid, Head of Operations for East Jakarta’s Sudin Gulkarmat, during a confirmation in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He stated that evacuation efforts began immediately after receiving a report from residents about the sacrificial cow falling into a drainage channel.

‘The rescue team received the report at 9:10 AM WIB from local RT head Mr Warjo. The cow was found trapped in the culvert while being prepared for slaughter,’ Abdul added.

The cow, owned by Suardi, is believed to have panicked during the slaughter preparation, running and falling into a culvert approximately one metre wide and two metres deep.

Two rescue units from sectors 51 and 512 were deployed to the scene with a total of 13 rescuers. The first unit arrived at 9:12 AM WIB, followed by the second five minutes later.

Rescuers began the evacuation at 9:19 AM WIB using rescue equipment and ropes to lift the cow from the culvert.

‘The evacuation was carried out cautiously as the cow was in a confined space, ensuring it did not suffer further injury,’ Abdul said.

After nearly an hour, the cow was successfully rescued at 10:11 AM WIB and was unharmed. The situation at the scene returned to normal following the operation.

The incident drew the attention of local residents who witnessed the fire department’s rescue operation.

East Jakarta’s Sudin Gulkarmat has urged the public to exercise caution when handling sacrificial animals, particularly during slaughter, to prevent similar incidents.
