Semarang (ANTARA) - As many as 33 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the lumpia food cluster participated in the “Lumpiavaganza 2026” event to mark the 479th anniversary of the City of Semarang. Semarang Mayor Agustina Wilujeng Pramestuti, in Semarang on Sunday, explained that “Lumpiavaganza” is a creative innovation to celebrate the city’s 479th founding anniversary, successfully combining environmental care initiatives with the preservation of local culinary specialties. Through a simple yet impactful scheme, residents could exchange five used plastic bottles for one lumpia voucher, with a maximum of two vouchers per person. Dozens of lumpia cluster MSMEs in Central Java’s capital were involved to fulfil voucher redemptions, ensuring economic circulation remains active while strengthening lumpia’s identity as Semarang’s iconic culinary speciality. As a result, thousands of plastic bottles were successfully collected, while directly educating the public on environmental cleanliness by not littering indiscriminately. “This programme is not merely a celebratory gimmick, but a smart strategy by the Semarang City Government in building a new culture: waste has value, a cleaner environment,” she said. According to her, major change begins with simple steps taken collectively. “Environmental cleanliness is our shared responsibility. Let us start from ourselves. Dispose of waste properly, and plastic bottles can be exchanged for lumpia,” she said.
