33 Firefighting Units Deployed to Tackle Major Fire in Kemayoran
A major fire broke out in a residential area of the densely populated Kemayoran district, Jalan Kemayoran Gempol, RT 02/RW 05, Kebon Kosong Village, Central Jakarta, on Monday evening (1 June). The Jakarta Disaster Management and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat) deployed dozens of firefighting units to extinguish the flames. Head of Gulkarmat DKI Jakarta, Bayu Meghantara, confirmed full resources were deployed to tackle the blaze, with officers working to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures. He stated the first report was received at 8:55 PM WIB, with initial deployment from Kemayoran Sector III using medium-pressure fire engines. Responders arrived at 9:05 PM WIB and began operations, with the situation remaining red status during ongoing suppression efforts. The dense residential layout necessitated rapid action, with the priority being to contain the fire due to high spread risk in the crowded low-rise area. As of publication, no definitive cause or material losses have been reported, with responders focused on preventing further damage. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has announced plans to recruit Personnel Service Providers (PJLP) for the Disaster Management and Rescue Agency, with 1,000 new personnel to be hired this year. During evacuation efforts, one fatality was confirmed: IW (22), a sick child of the homeowner left inside the burning stall. The governor has instructed Gulkarmat Chief Bayu Meghantara to immediately inspect fire safety standards across Jakarta’s buildings. The fire, which occurred amid flooding, was reported at 2:55 AM WIB and took three hours to extinguish, ending at 5:31 AM WIB.
