The construction of East Kalimantan’s largest renewable energy project, a 300MW hydropower plant, has officially begun. Presidential Special Envoy for Climate and Energy Hashim Djojohadikusumo stated during the groundbreaking ceremony in Samarinda on Monday: ‘This is the largest renewable energy project in East Kalimantan currently.’ He explained the Batoq Kelo project is a key government instrument to accelerate net-zero emissions targets before 2060, crucial for building Indonesia’s energy independence amid global geopolitical crises that often cause fuel shortages. He praised investors for regularly visiting the 600km site from Samarinda to secure the nearly Rp13 trillion investment.

PLN Director General Darmawan Prasodjo emphasised the Batoq Kelo hydropower plant in Mahakam Ulu has production costs significantly competitive against coal. He is optimistic the US$700 million infrastructure project will be completed faster than the initial five-year target. ‘This green energy mega-project will create numerous civil works jobs, actively involving local communities,’ he added.

East Kalimantan Governor Rudy Mas’ud welcomed the project, aligning with the province’s vision to become a carbon trading benchmark in the Asia-Pacific. He noted the plant in Mahakam Hulu Regency will power both urban and remote areas, with construction of a 122-kilometre highway and 120-metre bridge soon connecting North and West Kalimantan provinces. The provincial government remains committed to fostering a conducive green investment climate to benefit local communities.
