BANDUNG, West Java: Over 3,000 new students who passed the
entrance examination for the Bandung-based state-owned
Padjadjaran University (Unpad) have yet to register for the new
academic year.
Unpad's First Assistant Rector Ponpon S. Idjradinata said
Monday that 13,424 students had passed the written entrance
examination for Unpad but only 10,371 had registered with the
university.
Unpad public relations chief Hadi Suprapto Arifin said in
Bandung, West Java, on Monday that economic hardship might have
forced many students to give up their dream of studying at the
university.
"Maybe they don't have the money yet and so they are unable to
enrol for the next academic year," Hadi said.
Unpad charges up to Rp 5 million for new students enrolling in
diploma programs, and between Rp 1.750 million and Rp 2 million
for students taking degree programs.
Hadi said the university would extend the registration period
until mid-September.
"Especially for students coming from outside Java, perhaps
they needed a little longer to prepare," Hadi said. --JP
