300 Indonesians Seek to Renounce Citizenship, Minister Says Approval Not Guaranteed
Jakarta, VIVA – Minister of Law (Menkum) Supratman Andi Agtas revealed that to date, some 300 Indonesian citizens (WNI) have applied to renounce their citizenship. He said the number of applicants was relatively low.
However, he stressed that these applications would not necessarily all be approved by the government.
“The applications number roughly 300 to date — there are 300 people. And not all of them will necessarily be approved,” Supratman told reporters at the DPR RI complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, 21 July 2026.
He emphasised that the process of relinquishing Indonesian citizenship is now far stricter than before. Applications must go through deliberation involving around 14 to 15 ministries and agencies.
There are also several requirements that applicants must meet. One of them is that applicants must be free of tax arrears and any involvement in ongoing criminal cases before their application can be approved.
“Anyone seeking to relinquish their citizenship must have no outstanding tax debts and no connection to ongoing criminal cases. This must be verified among the 14 to 15 ministries and agencies. So once again, there is no need for the Indonesian public to worry,” he explained.
It is understood that the government has officially issued Government Regulation (PP) Number 30 of 2026 concerning Types and Tariffs for Types of Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP).
The regulation was signed by President Prabowo Subianto and came into effect on 1 August 2026.
“The announcement of Government Regulation Number 30 of 2026 concerning Types and Tariffs for Types of Non-Tax State Revenue applicable to the Ministry of Law comes into effect on 1 August 2026,” according to the ministry’s official website, quoted on Monday, 20 July 2026.
The regulation was signed by President Prabowo Subianto and promulgated in Jakarta on 2 July 2026.
Under PP Number 30 of 2026, the government has set tariffs of up to Rp 75 million for foreign nationals (WNA) applying to become Indonesian citizens (WNI) through the citizenship or naturalisation process.
According to the annex to the regulation, the Rp 75 million tariff applies to each citizenship application submitted by a foreign national.
However, the amount varies depending on the naturalisation route taken. Foreign nationals applying for citizenship through marriage are subject to a tariff of Rp 25 million per application.
Meanwhile, Indonesian citizens wishing to relinquish their citizenship will also be charged Rp 5 million — a fivefold increase from the previous fee of Rp 1 million.
