300 Aftershocks Recorded Following Devastating Twin Earthquakes in Venezuela

Venezuelan authorities have reported that at least 300 aftershocks have been recorded following the devastating twin earthquakes that struck the country on Wednesday (24/6) local time. The hundreds of aftershocks were recorded at a lower magnitude. Two powerful earthquakes, measuring Magnitude 7.2 and Magnitude 7.5, struck Venezuela in quick succession, just 39 seconds apart, on Wednesday evening local time. The two quakes, described by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as a seismic ‘doublet’ phenomenon, caused numerous buildings to collapse, damaged Venezuela’s main airport, and have so far killed more than 900 people. ‘Since 6:03 p.m. local time on 24 June until now, we have recorded a total of 302 seismic events. In addition to the two earthquakes of Magnitude 7.2 and Magnitude 7.5, there were 300 other seismic events, which are aftershocks,’ said Jorge Rodriguez, President of Venezuela’s National Assembly, in a speech broadcast on state television channel VTV, as reported by RIA Novosti on Saturday (27/6/2026). Rodriguez stated that the aftershocks occurred along three major geological faults that cross Venezuelan territory. The latest aftershock, recorded at Magnitude 4.9, was felt by residents on Friday (26/6) afternoon, according to Reuters reports. This aftershock was mostly felt in the Caracas area and the city of Maracay. It is not known if there were any new casualties from the aftershocks. Based on the latest government data, the death toll from the Venezuela twin quakes has reached at least 920 people. A further 3,360 people were injured. As many as 172 people are still believed to be trapped in the rubble of buildings that collapsed due to the quakes. It was reported that more than 50,000 other people are still missing after the quakes struck. Nearly 400 homes were destroyed, with much of the local infrastructure and hospitals suffering damage, and Venezuela’s main airport remains closed after sustaining damage.
