30 islands have no names
SURABAYA: A professor has expressed concern on Tuesday that at
least 30 of Indonesia's supposed 17,540 islands have no names. "I
am worried that if these islands are not given names immediately,
Indonesia will soon lose the islands to other countries. Even an
Indonesian island with a clear name has already gone to other
country," said Bangun Mulyo Sukotjo, a professor at Surabaya
Institute of Technology (ITS). Mulyo was referring to Sipadan-
Ligatan Islands, which were recently judged to be legally part of
Malaysia by an international court.
Mulyo is set to receive professorship in the near future in
remote sensing, a field of study that is useful in detecting the
emergence or disappearance of islands. -- Antara
