30 Countries with the Highest Teacher Salaries, Some Reaching Rp 1.7 Billion
Teacher salaries vary widely across countries, with some offering high compensation and others providing modest pay even after years of service. According to the latest Education at a Glance 2025 report, the top-paying countries see peak salaries more than double the OECD average of around US$76,000 per year.
Luxembourg tops the list with starting salaries nearing US$100,000 annually and peak pay exceeding US$170,000, equivalent to nearly Rp 3 billion, or a monthly range of Rp 133 million to Rp 250 million. Germany and Switzerland also provide competitive salaries, though they trail Luxembourg significantly. These findings affirm that in certain nations, teaching is a prestigious career with compensation comparable to other professional roles.
Conversely, in lower-paying countries such as Slovakia, Greece, and Brazil, starting salaries fall below US$30,000 per year, or about Rp 514 million annually (under Rp 42 million monthly). Salary growth in these places is limited, keeping earnings below the OECD average even after decades of experience.
In Indonesia, teacher pay lags far behind global standards and depends on employment status and institution type. Civil servant (PNS) teachers follow government regulations, while private school teachers’ salaries vary by location and school level.
