ZAMBOANGA, Philippines (AP): Extremists exploded a grenade
inside a restaurant frequented by soldiers on a southern
Philippine island, injuring three people in the second grenade
attack in the region in three days, police said on Wednesday.
The explosion occurred late on Tuesday in Isabela on Basilan
island, 880 kilometers south of Manila, police said. A soldier
and two civilians were injured.
On Saturday, a grenade explosion killed 10 people and injured
more than 70 others who were watching a fire engulf a grocery
store on the nearby island of Jolo in Sulu province, a known
rebel lair.
Hours before Tuesday's explosion, President Joseph Estrada
ordered the military to help police investigate the first attack,
which he called "barbaric." No one has claimed responsibility for
either attack.
