3,002 Aftershocks Recorded in NTT, Largest at M 6.2

Aftershocks continue to occur in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck several days ago. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has recorded 3,002 aftershocks.

“(Update) As of 19 August 2026 at 14.00, BMKG monitoring results show 3,002 aftershock activities with magnitudes ranging from 1.1 to 6.2,” said Nelly Florida Riama, Deputy for Geophysics at BMKG, during a press conference on Wednesday (19/8/2026).

Nelly said that 86 of these aftershocks were reported to have been felt by the public. Additionally, 25 aftershocks had a magnitude greater than 5.

Nelly noted that the high number of aftershocks in NTT is part of the energy release process. She predicted that aftershocks in NTT would continue for several more days.

“The public should understand that these numerous aftershocks occur because they are part of the earth’s crust adjustment process or energy release, seeking a new equilibrium after the major earthquake,” she added.

Basarnas previously provided the latest information regarding the earthquake response in NTT. Officials recorded an increase in the number of casualties.

“As of the third day yesterday, at 23.30 WIB, we have compiled the total number of victims at 202 people, with 70 dead and 132 injured,” said Rear Admiral Yudhi Bramantyo, Director of Operations at Basarnas, during a press conference on Tuesday (18/8).

He detailed that the 132 injured consisted of 40 people with serious injuries and 92 with minor injuries. He said personnel were still sweeping the affected areas.
