28 Padang-Jakarta flights cancelled due to volcanic ash spread
The cancellation of 28 flight routes from Padang to Jakarta affected 3,270 passengers who had to cancel their journeys to the capital yesterday.
Padang (ANTARA) — A total of 28 flights from Minangkabau International Airport (BIM) in Padang Pariaman, West Sumatra, to Jakarta between Sunday (6 September) and Monday 7 September 2026 were cancelled following the operational closure of Soekarno-Hatta Airport and Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, caused by the spread of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.
“Overall, Minangkabau International Airport continues to serve flights on routes outside the Jakarta area. A total of 14 flights operated normally without delay. Specifically for flights from Padang to Jakarta, 28 flights were forced to cancel due to the operational closure of Soekarno-Hatta Airport and Halim Perdanakusuma Airport because of the volcanic ash from the Mount Anak Krakatau eruption,” said Erwin Adiyasha, Head of the Operational Services and Security Division at BIM, in Padang on Monday.
The cancellation of the Padang-Jakarta route also disrupted the travel plans of prospective passengers who already had flight schedules for that day.
The situation forced a number of passengers to rearrange their travel plans as a result of the temporary halt to flights bound for Jakarta.
“The cancellation of 28 flight routes from Padang to Jakarta affected 3,270 passengers who had to cancel their journeys to the capital yesterday,” he said.
Meanwhile, flight operations at BIM on Monday, 7 September 2026 remained constrained, particularly for the Jakarta route, owing to ongoing aviation safety concerns at the destination airports.
“Flight operations at BIM today are not yet fully normal, especially for the Jakarta route. The obstacle faced relates purely to aviation safety factors at the destination airports, as Soekarno-Hatta and Halim Perdanakusuma airports remain closed due to the spread of volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau. Meanwhile, operations for routes other than Jakarta are running smoothly as usual,” he said.
The airlines have been coordinating to provide assistance to passengers affected by the cancellation of the Padang-Jakarta route.
Such assistance is being provided taking into account the operational conditions of the destination airports as well as the applicable rules of each airline.
“The airlines have fully coordinated to provide the best solutions for all affected passengers. We are facilitating passengers with two main options, namely rescheduling for the next departure once the destination airport reopens, or a full refund in accordance with the applicable rules of each airline,” he said.
BIM’s management stated that conditions at the terminal remained under control despite the cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, and it has been confirmed that no crowding occurred in the terminal area.
He said BIM management urged passengers to continue monitoring flight information through official airline and airport channels before heading to the terminal, particularly those bound for Jakarta.
“Although the number of affected passengers is quite significant, we ensure that there has been no passenger build-up in the BIM terminal area. This is thanks to the promptness of officers in providing early information through official channels, so most prospective passengers chose not to come to the airport and instead processed their tickets online,” he said.
