28 caught for fake IDs

SEMARANG, Central Java: Head of the city immigration office Syaiful Rachman said over the weekend that his office caught 28 people trying to obtain passports with fake identity cards.

He said most of the passport applicants were long-time illegal immigrants who wanted to travel to their countries of origin.

The immigration office rejected their passport applications because some of them could not speak Indonesian fluently nor recall their home addresses, he said.

The local immigration office issued 22,000 passports, and over 1,500 documents in lieu of passports, last year.

He added that many applications for passports were rejected because the applicants had lied about the purpose of their overseas trips, Antara reported.(imn)
