261 foreign tourists rescued after Nepal flash floods

The number of foreign tourists successfully rescued following flash floods in Nepal has risen to 261, while 320 others remain uncontactable, the country’s tourism department said on Saturday (29 August).

“As of 18.00 [12.15 GMT] on 29 August 2026, a total of 261 foreign nationals/tourists have been successfully rescued,” the department said in a statement on X.

At the same time, authorities are still unable to reach 320 other people.

Among those rescued are citizens of India, China, Spain, the United States, Russia, Germany, Italy, Bulgaria and Switzerland. The nationalities of 21 other people have yet to be confirmed.

Flash floods swept through northern Nepal on Wednesday morning, 26 August, after an extremely strong flow of water from China struck the Bhote Koshi River.

The floods occurred after an earthquake triggered a landslide. Based on the latest data, more than 2,000 people have been declared missing.
