254 prisoners in Central Java released immediately after receiving remission

Semarang (ANTARA) - A total of 254 prisoners in various correctional facilities and state detention centres in Central Java were released immediately after receiving remission in conjunction with the 81st Anniversary of Indonesian Independence.

Head of the Central Java Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections, Mardi Santoso, said in Semarang on Monday that in total 9,516 prisoners received remission.

“A total of 9,262 people received General Remission I, while 254 people received General Remission II,” he said.

Mardi explained that recipients of General Remission I received a reduction in their sentence, while recipients of General Remission II were released immediately after receiving a sentence reduction.

In addition to prisoners, 35 juvenile inmates also received sentence reductions in conjunction with the 81st Anniversary of Indonesian Independence.

According to Mardi, prisoners at the Class I Penitentiary in Semarang were the largest recipients of remission in Central Java, reaching 1,005 people.

Of that number, 17 prisoners were released immediately after receiving remission.

Mardi said the granting of remission is part of the rehabilitation process to encourage inmates to demonstrate positive change during their sentence.

He expressed hope that the granting of remission would serve as motivation for inmates to improve discipline, maintain good behaviour, and consistently participate in rehabilitation programmes as preparation before returning to society.

According to him, the granting of remission is also part of the implementation of the correctional system, which places rehabilitation as an important element in the process of inmate transformation.
