Approximately 500 people have been affected by a major fire in the densely populated residential area of Kemayoran Gempol, located behind Pasar Jiung, Kebon Kosong, Central Jakarta, on Monday night (1/6/2026).

Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief, Kombes Pol Reynold EP Hutagalerm, stated that around 250 semi-permanent buildings were impacted by the blaze. “Based on preliminary data, approximately 300 heads of households, totalling roughly 500 individuals, have been affected by the fire,” Reynold said in a written statement to journalists on Tuesday (2/6/2026).

Two injured victims, identified as Puput and Dika, are currently receiving treatment at Hermina Kemayoran Hospital, while another victim, Suparno, has been referred to RSCM, Cikini.

Reynold noted that the police, alongside relevant authorities, have established evacuation tents in the Kebon Kosong area for those affected. He added that they are also coordinating with the Sat Brimob Polda Metro Jaya to assist the refugees’ needs through a field kitchen. “A field kitchen has been provided since the early hours of the morning to help meet the needs of the fire victims,” Reynold said.

Initially, residents attempted to extinguish the flames using three portable fire extinguishers (APAR) belonging to the local RW secretariat. However, the fire spread rapidly, making it difficult to contain. The police suspect the fire was triggered by an electrical short circuit, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
