Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman has officially revealed a list of 25 fortified rice brands whose nutritional contents do not match the labels on their packaging. The finding is based on laboratory tests conducted by four credible institutions, which showed a fatal discrepancy between the nutritional claims and the actual contents of the products.

Beyond the issue of content, Amran highlighted extremely high pricing, with some brands sold at up to Rp57,000 per kilogram, far above the fair price of premium or medium rice. “This causes suffering for consumers. The purpose of fortification for pregnant women and stunting prevention is not achieved because the price has instead soared,” Amran said at the Ministry of Agriculture office in Jakarta on Tuesday (15/9).

The following is the list of 25 fortified rice brands declared not to match their packaging labels:

The Agriculture Minister emphasised that this practice is highly detrimental to the public, especially because the main target of fortified rice is vulnerable groups such as breastfeeding mothers and stunted children. On average, producers sell the rice at around Rp22,000 per kilogram, when it should be priced at Rp13,500 per kilogram.

The Ministry of Agriculture is now coordinating with the relevant authorities to follow up on these findings. Amran warned producers not to take unfair advantage by manipulating nutritional labels that are greatly needed by the wider public.
