23 foreigners detained in KL
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysian immigration authorities have detained 23 foreign lecturers caught working without permits at an international school here, reports said yesterday.
The lecturers -- comprising 12 men and 11 women aged between 26 and 47 -- are from Australia, Britain, New Zealand and the United States, the assistant deputy director of immigration enforcement, Mohamad Aris Chonin, said.
"Our checks revealed that most of the lecturers had entered the country on social passes in September," Aris was quoted as saying by a local tabloid, the Malay Mail newspaper.
They could face a fine of up to 1,000 ringgit (US$303) each, a maximum jail term of six months or both.
