228 Traders in Kebon Roek Market Parking Area to be Reorganised
The Mataram City Government in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) plans to reorganise hundreds of informal traders currently selling in the front area and parking lot of the Kebon Roely Market in Ampenan. The restructuring is intended to make the market area more orderly and eliminate the impression of urban decay.
The Head of Kebon Roek Market, Malwi, stated that out of a total of 928 traders operating in the market, approximately 600 are permanent traders who have been officially registered. Meanwhile, there are 228 informal traders who have been selling in the front section of the market.
“The traders located in the (outer) area are the ones we will relocate. Once the space has been properly and aesthetically arranged, they will trade inside the market,” Malwi said when confirmed on Wednesday (2/9/2026).
The plan to relocate these 228 traders is expected to take place in the near future. However, not all traders can be moved simultaneously, as the number of available vacant stalls inside the market is currently only around 160 units, each measuring 2x2 metres.
“There are 228 traders, so we cannot accommodate everyone in the existing stalls. We will endeavour to find a way to manage this. We have already begun constructing additional facilities, which we will then reorganise,” he added.
On the other hand, although the 228 traders in the front area of Kebon Roek Market have not yet occupied the internal market stalls, Malwi ensured that they remain obligated to pay daily levies.
“Trading within the market area requires a daily levy of Rp 1,000 per square metre. The distribution of these levies is regulated based on the area occupied,” he explained.
Malwi noted that the presence of hundreds of traders in the front area significantly helps in meeting the daily revenue targets for Kebon Roek Market. The daily revenue target for the market stands at Rp 2,260,000.
It was previously reported that the Mataram City Trade Office has allocated a budget of Rp 200 million to beautify and reorganise Kebon Roek Market. This step is being taken to enhance public shopping comfort and remove the sense of slum-like conditions.
“We will organise it so that there is no social jealousy. We will also enforce order, particularly for those at the front of the market. The area in front of the fence is specifically for parking, but it has been occupied by traders for some time,” said the Head of the Matrum City Trade Office, Irwan Harimansyah, in a previous statement.
“We will prepare land within the market and urge the traders at the front (fence) to trade inside. This is so that the market remains clean and well-maintained,” he added.
