225,000 Jakarta Households Now Practise Waste Segregation

The Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta has recorded that 225,116 households have implemented waste segregation since the issuance of Gubernatorial Instruction Number 5 of 2026 concerning the Movement for Waste Segregation and Processing at Source. “This implementation shows extraordinary results. Active citizen participation has surged sharply by 187 per cent, with 225,116 households now disciplined in sorting waste from home,” said the Head of the Regional Development Planning Agency for DKI Jakarta Province, Atika Nur Rahmania, in Jakarta on Wednesday. Through Gubernatorial Instruction Number 5 of 2026, households are required to independently sort waste into four categories: organic, inorganic, hazardous and toxic materials, and residue. This policy came into effect on 10 May 2026 as an effort to reduce the burden on the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site. Public education has also been consistently strengthened, including through socialisation on waste management at source and the 2026 Jakarta Eco Future Festival as a medium for sustainable waste management education. Atika stated that in waste management, the reduction of inorganic waste reaches approximately 47 tonnes per day through the waste bank network. Meanwhile, the Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, Dudi Gardesi, said the city administration continues to encourage the public to be disciplined in sorting and reducing waste from the source. According to him, simple steps such as reducing the use of single-use items, finishing meals, sorting waste, and processing organic waste will greatly help reduce the burden on Bantargebang. On the other hand, the government is also improving downstream waste management facilities and systems, one of which is the gradual implementation of a controlled landfill system starting 1 August 2026. This step is part of the transition towards ending open dumping practices while improving waste governance to be safer for the environment and the community. Concurrently, the city administration continues to increase the capacity of waste processing facilities, both within the city and in the Bantargebang area, so that more waste can be processed before being landfilled.
