223 Imported Livestock from Australia Arrive at Juanda Airport
Sidoarjo, Kompas.com - An importer from East Java has brought around 250 head of livestock from Australia via Juanda International Airport, Sidoarjo. This step is taken to improve the genetic quality of local livestock and promote domestic milk production. Director of PT Tombak Mas Nusantara, Aji Bagus Setiyawan, stated that the shipment includes sheep, dairy cows, and camels. The types of sheep imported consist of Texel, Suffolk, and Dorper, totaling 165 head. These three types were chosen because they have superior seed quality. “We want to focus on developing the seeds that exist in Indonesia so that local farmers can develop their sheep seeds,” said Aji on Monday (30/03/2026). “For dairy cows, we want to hand them over to farmers so that dairy cows can produce milk and meet the national milk needs,” he added. The importation also includes 35 head of Camelus dromedarius camels. These animals will be used to support the ecotourism sector. “For camels, we want to support ecotourism activities in our country,” he explained. All livestock must undergo a quarantine period before distribution. This process is carried out to ensure the animals’ health and prevent contagious diseases. “We will immediately send them to the Quarantine in the Tandes area in Surabaya for a 14-day quarantine process,” he said. The investment value for each livestock varies. The highest price is for camels, reaching Rp 130 million per head.
