22,798 Passengers Affected by Soekarno-Hatta Airport Closure

Approximately 22,798 passengers have been affected by the temporary closure of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport caused by the dispersal of volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has ensured that airport staff and airlines continue to provide assistance to passengers while airport operations remain suspended.

The Director General of Civil Aviation, Lukman F. Laisa, stated that officials are focusing on providing regular updates and ensuring passenger needs are met while they remain at the airport.

“The main focus of all airport staff and airlines at this time is to provide periodic information, ensure the availability of waiting areas, and provide handling in accordance with procedures,” Lukman said in a holding statement on Sunday (6/9/2026).

The operational closure of Soekarno-Hatta was implemented based on NOTAM Number A3341/26 from 01:30 to 09:30 WIB. The closure was initiated after paper tests conducted between 00:35 and 01:05 WIB showed positive results for volcanic ash dispersal.

Recent paper test results conducted by the Soekarno-Hatta Class I Meteorological Station between 06:05 and 06:35 WIB also indicated the presence of volcanic ash in the airport area. This condition led to the extension of the airport’s operational closure until 09:30 WIB, as per NOTAM Number A3344/26.

Lukman noted that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation is also monitoring the recovery of flight schedules once conditions permit. The airport closure has the potential to cause a ripple effect on aircraft rotation, fleet availability, subsequent flight schedules, and terminal capacity.

“Adjustments to flight operations will continue to be carried out dynamically based on developments in the field. Safety remains the top priority in every operational decision,” he added.
