21st Highland Gathering

JAKARTA (JP): The 21st Jakarta Highland Gathering, an annual celebration of Scottish sports and culture, is scheduled to be held at Senayan Stadium, South Jakarta, on Sunday.

The Gathering's chairman, J. Crawford Hogarth, said on Wednesday that the function was one way of introducing Scotland's culture to Indonesian people.

"We hope to introduce our culture to all Indonesians," he said.

The Gathering will be held under the joint coordination of the British Embassy and the city administration.

There will be demonstrations of traditional Scottish sports, such as volley ball, track and field events, tug of war, mini soccer and rugby and Scottish traditional dancing. Thirteen dance teams will be in attendance, having converged from Jakarta from Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.

The Stratchclyde Police Pipe and Drum Band from Scotland will play at the Gathering and a team of expatriate women will demonstrate Huplwondo Martial Arts.

The organizers have also announced that one of the star attractions of previous Gatherings, the Australian Axemen's Association Team, will be returning this year.

At least part of the money collected from sponsorship and ticket sales will be donated by the organizer to an Indonesian social foundation.

"We have promised to donate Rp 50 million ((US$ 22,727) to Panti Usada Mulia Hospital," Hogarth said.(31)
