219th Anniversary of KAJ: Pramono Urges Catholic Community to Support DKI's Waste Sorting Initiative
Pramono stated that Jakarta can no longer rely on outdated waste management methods, such as dumping all waste at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site. He assessed the condition of the final disposal site as now concerning.
“Tomorrow in Kuningan, we will hold and initiate an event for waste sorting in accordance with the governor’s instructions. Because we can no longer rely on the old pattern of burying all waste at Bantargebang,” said Pramono at the Jakarta Cathedral area, Saturday (9/5/2026).
Pramono said the waste pile at Bantargebang has now reached more than 55 million tonnes and has experienced landslides several times. Therefore, the DKI Provincial Government is collaborating with the Ministry of Environment and the Coordinating Ministry for Food to promote the waste sorting movement from house to house.
“Bantargebang already has more than 55 million tonnes of waste. It’s no longer sufficient and has experienced landslides several times,” he stated.
Pramono hopes that the movement will receive support from the church and the Archdiocese of Jakarta. This is to provide a broader impact for the capital’s residents.
“As Jakarta’s Governor, collaborating with the Ministry of Environment and the Coordinating Minister for Food, tomorrow we will launch the waste sorting movement. And on this occasion, we ask Father and the ranks in the Archdiocese of Jakarta to support the waste sorting movement in Jakarta,” he said.
In addition, Pramono also mentioned the achievement of reducing the number of slum RW in Jakarta. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of slum RW has decreased from 445 to 211 RW. According to him, this shows increasing awareness among residents to maintain the environment.
The 219th KAJ anniversary event was also attended by Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar and Archbishop of Jakarta Ignatius Cardinal Suharyo. The celebration was filled with leisurely walking activities and interfaith prayers.
