2,100 nabbed in N. Jakarta

JAKARTA (JP): Thousands of people have been fined between Rp
3,500 (US$1.50) and Rp 5,500 each in a judicial operation
conducted by officials of the North Jakarta mayoralty for
traveling without carrying proper identification cards.

The operation, carried out on Wednesday, targeted those who
did not have residency cards, who had failed to report to the
authorities for not possessing an identification card and those
whose identification cards had expired.

The Antara news agency reported that 2,100 people had been
tried on the spot during the operation.

The operation involved Judge I Made Sudarma and Prosecutor ARS
Syafrudin and was witnessed by the head of the Jakarta Residence
Supervision and Investigation Office, Sudarsono. It was conducted
in Semper Timur subdistrict.

"The operation is primarily aimed at enhancing public
awareness about the importance of identification cards,"
Soedarsono said. (32)
