2,043 nabbed in operation

JAKARTA (JP): Law and order officers have arrested 2,043 people during Operation Yustisi (Operation Justice) in South Jakarta over the last two years for violating regulations on sanitation and peace and order.

Total fines collected from violators during the operation, launched in November, 1993, reach Rp 12 million (US$5,454), South Jakarta Mayor Pardjoko said.

The fines are set from Rp 3,500 to Rp 30,000, depending on the type of violation, the Antara news agency reported.

The highest fine was given to a store owner on Jl. Panglima Polim Raya for his negligence in providing garbage dumps near his store. Urinating in public carries a fine of Rp 6,000 to Rp 7,500.

In a written address on Tuesday, read by Ramal P., head of the mayoralty's law and order office, Pardjoko urged the public to abide by the existing regulations.

"We hope that people, especially street vendors who frequently offend the laws, realize their mistakes and do not repeat their offenses in the future," he said. (25)
