2026 Economic Census Data to Strengthen Indonesia's MSMEs
The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) is preparing to conduct the 2026 Economic Census (SE2026). This major initiative is an effort to collect data on all business activities in Indonesia to obtain a complete picture of the condition and development of the national business landscape. The data generated from this census will become an important policy foundation for the government, particularly in formulating more targeted economic development policies and programmes. For Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), the benefits of SE2026 can be felt through various business empowerment programmes. Complete and up-to-date data helps the government recognise the characteristics, needs, and challenges faced by business actors in each region. The results of SE2026 are also designed to support efforts to expand financing access for business actors. Through valid census data, the government can map which business potentials need to be encouraged to grow faster. This up-to-date information will later become the primary basis for designing financing and business mentoring programmes, giving more local business actors a golden opportunity to expand their business scale. Beyond capital matters, SE2026 data helps the government compile training programmes that are more synchronised with real needs in the field. Aspects such as skills improvement, business governance, technology utilisation, and product development strategies can be mapped in a more structured manner. Well-targeted training is certain to help business actors increase productivity as well as market competitiveness. Another benefit of SE2026 is the availability of a comprehensive information base regarding the map of economic activities in various regions. Through this data, the government can read patterns of goods and services distribution, as well as identify regions with high economic potential. This information is crucial for supporting smooth logistics flows and equitable development between regions. Equally important, SE2026 data will become a valuable reference source for education, research, and macro planning. Academics, researchers, business actors, and local governments can utilise it to understand market dynamics and design effective programmes. BPS emphasises that SE2026 is not merely a routine data collection agenda on paper. Every piece of information provided by the public and business actors will become a key instrument in determining the direction of Indonesia’s economic policy in the future. Accurate data helps the government see growing business sectors, sectors that need support, and future economic opportunities.
