2026 Economic Census: BPS Klungkung to Survey All Online Entrepreneurs
The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Klungkung is preparing to conduct the 2026 economic census. In addition to enumerating all types of businesses, BPS will also survey the socio-economic conditions of the population. The rapid increase in the number of online entrepreneurs is cited as the main challenge for the economic census.
“What is interesting in 2026 is that the challenges differ from previous years. There are many invisible, virtual businesses that were not previously recorded. The 2016 economic census did not see such a high prevalence of these. Now, it is very high, and it is difficult to record them,” said Head of BPS Klungkung Anak Agung Gede Dirga Kardita to detikBali on Wednesday (22/4/2026).
In the 2026 Economic Census, Dirga must enumerate online entrepreneurs, whose numbers are estimated to be around 30 to 40 percent of the total entrepreneurs in Klungkung. To achieve this, census officers will need to work extra hard to detect the existence of these virtual businesses.
“But with the support of the regency government and the business associations that I have already approached in Klungkung, I am confident we can produce the best data from the 2026 economic census,” Dirga explained.
In addition, he hopes that all entrepreneurs will provide the best data to the census officers. Dirga stated that there would be a significant impact on the enumeration results if entrepreneurs do not assist in providing the best data.
“Data serves as the basis for development planning. The economic census is used in calculating economic growth. It will also provide a basic picture for investors. If we cannot present good data, investors will hesitate to come,” he clarified.
The 2026 economic census itself will be conducted over four months from May to August 2026. “We estimate around 162 census officers. For recruitment, we have already started approaching villages, as there are many potential young people in the villages,” he concluded.
