2026 Economic Census Begins, BPS DIY Deploys 4,082 Officers to Record 606,000 Businesses

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has commenced the 2026 Economic Census (SE) in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), running from 15 June to 31 August 2026. A total of 4,082 officers have been deployed to record data on approximately 606,000 business actors spread across the entire DIY region using a door-to-door data collection method.

Deputy Head of BPS RI, Sonny Harry Budiutomo Harmadi, stated that this economic census not only targets registered businesses but also various economic activities developing within communities and households. "The system will see census officers not only visiting registered business actors but also going to homes to capture all existing economic activities. So it is very possible that the census officers will encounter new businesses," Sonny said during the Launch of the 2026 Economic Census at Teras Malioboro Yogyakarta on Thursday (18/6/2026).

Sonny noted that of the approximately 606,000 business actors to be recorded in DIY, some 596,000 are micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This data collection is part of the government’s effort to obtain a complete picture of the regional economic structure down to the smallest business level.

BPS will utilise artificial intelligence (AI) technology as a quality control system to support data quality. This technology is used to detect anomalies or irregularities in the data collected by field officers, making the census results more accurate. "For example, it is impossible for a child to be older than their father, or for business turnover to be far lower than the costs incurred," he said. "AI technology helps with filtering so that the resulting data quality is more accurate," he added.
