2026 Crisis Already Severe: Not Just Mobile Phone Prices Rising
The 2026 crisis is already severe, not just causing surges in mobile phone and laptop prices, but the global memory chip shortage is also affecting the prices of Meta’s virtual reality (VR) headsets. The price of those devices has been increased by around Rp 1 million.
Meta announced the Quest 3S with 128 GB storage for US$349.99 (Rp 6 million). That price is up from the previous US$299.99 (Rp 5.1 million), quoted from Reuters, Saturday (18/4/2026).
Additionally, Meta is planning a price adjustment for the Quest 3 with 512 GB memory to US$599.99 (Rp 10.3 million), up from US$100 (Rp 1.7 million). The price of the 256 GB headset has risen by US$50 (Rp 859,000) to US$449.99 (Rp 7.7 million).
Meta explained that the price adjustment also applies to refurbished Quest units. Meanwhile, accessory prices remain unchanged.
Sony has also raised prices on its console devices. The PlayStation 5 has increased by US$100 in the United States (US). The Japanese company is facing similar issues with rising costs of key components.
Memory chips have been in short supply and rising in price since the beginning of this year. The cause is the rapid development of AI, which is driving demand for memory chips.
As a result, chip manufacturers are prioritising their components for data centres, which offer higher profit margins than consumer devices.
This shortage has led several companies to raise device prices, such as Dell to Microsoft. Smartphone vendors are doing the same.
According to CNBC Indonesia records, mobile phone price increases range from Rp 100,000 to Rp 2 million this April. One example is the Galaxy A07 with 4/64 GB storage, rising from around Rp 1.4 million to Rp 1.6 million.
