2002 Bali bombings remembered in UK

UK: A memorial to the victims of the 2002 Bali bombings is to be erected in London, a group representing family members announced on Sunday.

Westminster City Council, the authority governing the center of the British capital, has granted permission for the granite and stone structure, a 1.5 meter diameter globe depicting a dove for each of the 202 victims of the blasts on Oct. 12, 2002. Twenty-eight of the dead were British.

It will also bear the inscription: "You were robbed of life, Your spirit enriches ours."

The announcement follows a new wave of blasts on the popular tourist island on Saturday that left at least 26 people dead just days before the third anniversary of the 2002 attacks.

Alex Braden, whose 28-year-old son Daniel was killed in 2002 while on a rugby tour in Bali, said the UK Bali Bombings Victims Group had battled hard to win permission for the memorial.

The globe will be placed in Saint James's Park in central London, close to the headquarters of Britain's Foreign Office, which has pledged money toward the memorial. -- AFP
