200 Students Learn Diplomacy at Model UN Conference in Pekanbaru
A total of 200 students and university attendees from 35 educational institutions took part in the Asia Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN) Pekanbaru Chapter, held from 25-26 July 2026. The conference, organised by the International Global Network (IGN) in collaboration with the Indonesian Creative School (ICS) Pekanbaru, simulated United Nations sessions to help participants understand global issues while developing diplomacy, negotiation, and policy formulation skills.
Under the theme ‘Powering Progress: Equity and Sustainability in a Changing World’, delegates debated two main topics within the UNESCO and UNEP councils: inclusive education for people with disabilities and the management of lithium-based electric vehicle battery waste. The UNEP council session received support from state-owned enterprise PT Pertamina (Persero) as part of its efforts to enhance youth awareness of sustainability and environmental issues.
The event was officially opened by Syafrian Tommy, Acting Head of the Pekanbaru Education Office, representing the Mayor of Pekanbaru. He stated that the forum serves as a platform for young people to develop diplomatic skills, understand diversity, and strengthen their concern for sustainable development issues.
Muhammad Fahrizal, President of International Global Network, explained that participants were challenged not only to defend their assigned country’s position but also to formulate solutions to global problems through negotiation and policy drafting. ‘Participants are challenged to view issues through three main lenses: power, justice, and time,’ he said.
Romy Charles Adam, Director of Indonesian Creative School, noted that the Model United Nations simulation provides an experience not typically gained in the classroom, allowing students to practice articulating ideas, collaborating, and making decisions in an international forum. Meanwhile, PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan provided scholarships for 15 students to attend the conference. IGN stated that similar AYIMUN events are scheduled to be held in Depok on 1-2 August 2026 and in Bandung on 29-30 August 2026.
