200 iPhone Users Targeted by Fake WhatsApp App – Delete It Immediately!
A fake application masquerading as WhatsApp (WA) has been reported spreading on the iOS platform, targeting iPhone users. This method is used to deceive victims into downloading malicious software onto their phones. The fake WhatsApp app attack is reported to have targeted around 200 iPhone users, with the majority of victims based in Italy. Affected users have received warning notifications, been logged out of their WhatsApp accounts, and advised to immediately delete the suspicious application. According to a report by Italian media La Repubblica, the perpetrators’ modus operandi involves disguising the app as a WhatsApp update. The application is designed to closely resemble the official WhatsApp version and is distributed as an update or legitimate variant. A WhatsApp spokesperson stated that this attack is a highly targeted social engineering effort, making it easy for victims to be deceived. The danger is that once the fake app is installed, the victim’s device can be accessed by third parties, potentially leading to the theft or misuse of data within it. WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta, has confirmed that this incident is not caused by a security flaw in its application, as gathered by KompasTekno from Forbes. “This is not a vulnerability in end-to-end encryption; WhatsApp continues to protect the communications of users who use the official WhatsApp application,” said the WhatsApp spokesperson. Instead, Meta suspects this attack is part of a planned phishing campaign, though further details about the victims have not been disclosed. Previously, security agencies like the FBI have also warned of attacks targeting users of such applications. WhatsApp itself has stated that it is taking “aggressive steps” to protect users from spyware companies and other malicious actors attempting to exploit user trust. The company also urges users to remain vigilant and to download the WhatsApp application only from official sources.
