TANGERANG - Approximately 200 Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) have been dispatched to Japan to work under five-year contracts. Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar stated that the initial phase began with around 50 PMI departing for Japan on Friday night (3/4/2026). “Tonight starts with about 50 heading to Japan with five-year contracts,” said Muhaimin at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang City on Friday. “They have (undergone training). They must not depart before being ready,” he added. Upon arrival in Japan, the PMI will be directly placed in their chosen workplaces and begin working immediately. Muhaimin explained that the workers will be employed in various sectors, from manufacturing to machinery industries. “Manufacturing, industry, machinery, and so on,” he elaborated. In addition to Japan, the government is opening opportunities for PMI placement in other advanced countries, such as in Europe and South Korea. “Not just that. There are government-to-government arrangements, and some mixed ones,” said Muhaimin. He added that this PMI dispatch programme involves various parties, from the government and state-owned enterprises to the private sector. “This is a great opportunity to work abroad, amid the needs of advanced countries for productive labour,” he stated.
