20 Trains Halted Temporarily Following Bantul Earthquake
Twenty train journeys in the KAI Operational Area 6 Yogyakarta were temporarily halted following a magnitude 3.5 earthquake in Bantul on Thursday afternoon. All services have since resumed after inspections of railway infrastructure and rolling stock were completed.
The earthquake occurred at around 5.20pm local time and was felt across several areas. As a result, KAI suspended train operations to allow for checks on track conditions and railway infrastructure.
“At 5.42pm local time, all lines were declared safe and all trains that had been halted were able to continue their journeys,” said Feni Novida Saragih, Public Relations Manager of KAI Operational Area 6 Yogyakarta, in a written statement on Thursday (20/8/2026).
Feni said the inspection is a mandatory KAI procedure following an earthquake. It is carried out to ensure that railway safety standards are maintained.
“KAI Operational Area 6 Yogyakarta apologises for the inconvenience caused to affected passengers and thanks customers for their patience under the circumstances,” she continued.
Feni added that all 20 halted trains have now resumed their journeys.
“KAI Operational Area 6 Yogyakarta affirms that safety is the priority in train operations. Once inspections were completed and all lines declared safe, train services resumed,” she concluded.

KA 70 Malabar – 11 minutes
KA 726 Commuterline Yogyakarta-Palur – 10 minutes
KA 86b Sancaka – 23 minutes
KA 7006 Batavia – 24 minutes
KA 282 Bengawan – 25 minutes
KA 2722 Kalem Service – 19 minutes
KA 506 Prameks – 22 minutes
KA 568 YIA Airport – 24 minutes
KA 62b Manahan – 17 minutes
KA 158 Wijaya Kusuma – 14 minutes

It was previously reported that a magnitude 3.5 earthquake shook Bantul. The earthquake did not pose a tsunami risk.
“Earthquake Info Update Mag:3.5, 20-Aug-26 17:20:57 WIB,” wrote the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in a written statement on Thursday (20/8).
BMKG recorded the earthquake’s epicentre at 7.887 degrees South latitude, 110.45567 degrees East longitude. The epicentre was located 11 km northeast of Bantul, Special Region of Yogyakarta.
The earthquake was reported to have been felt in Bantul, Sleman, Klaten and Magelang.
