20 Train Services Temporarily Halted Following M 3.5 Earthquake in Bantul
A magnitude 3.5 earthquake struck Bantul, Central Java, on Thursday afternoon (20/8/2026) at approximately 17:20 WIB, causing 20 train services in the KAI Operational Area 6 Yogyakarta region to be temporarily halted for safety inspections.
The earthquake was felt across several areas, prompting KAI to suspend train operations to allow for inspection of railway tracks and infrastructure.
“At 17:42 WIB, all lines were declared safe and all trains that had been halted were able to continue their journeys,” said Feni Novida Saragih, Public Relations Manager of KAI Operational Area 6 Yogyakarta, in a written statement.
Feni explained that the inspection is a mandatory KAI procedure following an earthquake, carried out to ensure that railway safety standards are maintained.
“KAI Operational Area 6 Yogyakarta apologises for the inconvenience caused to affected passengers and thanks customers for their patience under these circumstances,” she added.

A video of a train stopped on the tracks in Sanggrahan Village, Prambanan District, Klaten, went viral on social media, with reports attributing the halt to the earthquake.
“At 17:48 an earthquake occurred causing the train to stop at Geneng Sanggrahan Prambanan Klaten,” read a post from the Facebook account Merapi_News.
KAI Operational Area 6 Yogyakarta confirmed that all train journeys remained safe and secure following the earthquake. Train services in the region were temporarily halted for inspection of infrastructure and rolling stock after the earthquake to ensure the safety of all passengers.
