State railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) reported that 20,101 elderly passengers utilised its 20 percent fare reduction programme at Tegal Station during the first half of 2026. The figure underscores growing confidence among senior citizens in rail services.

KAI Operational Area 4 Semarang Public Relations Manager Luqman Arif stated that the discount is a form of appreciation and concern for elderly customers, allowing them to travel more economically without compromising service quality. Data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) in 2025 shows the population aged 60 and above reached 33.94 million, or approximately 11.9 percent of the total population, a demographic trend KAI is keen to accommodate.

To access the discount, elderly passengers need only register their identity once, either at station counters or through customer service, proving they are at least 60 years old. Once registered, the 20 percent reduction is automatically applied to subsequent ticket purchases via the Access by KAI application, the official website, or other authorised sales channels.

KAI Operational Area 4 Semarang noted that of the 20,101 senior passengers served at Tegal Station, 9,872 were departures and 10,229 were arrivals. The company continues to enhance facilities for elderly passengers, including improved access to departure areas, comfortable waiting rooms, and assistance from station staff. KAI encourages families to help elderly relatives register for the programme to make their journeys more practical and affordable.
