2 quarry workers buried alive

CIREBON, West Java: Two workers of a sand quarry in the Gemulung Tonggoh village died on Sunday after a 15 meter overhanging sand cliff collapsed and buried them.

A police source told Antara that the victims were Kartim, 30 and a newlywed, and Toha, 29. Kartim was a local resident, while Toha came from Pengarengan village.

The landslide took place so suddenly that the victims, who were working with a number of other workers, did not have time to escape.

The agency also reported that the quarry was operating without permits. Some workers said that in 1995 alone 10 workers died in accidents in the quarry while dozens of others suffered from various injuries. (swe)
