2 Million Vehicles Leave Jakarta from Lebaran Eve to H+1
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Indonesian police recorded 2,007,253 vehicles leaving Jakarta up to Sunday (22/3/2026) at 06.00 WIB. This figure equates to 56.9% of the total projected vehicle movement during this year’s Lebaran homecoming traffic. “Vehicle movement indicates that the homecoming flow is still ongoing,” said Spokesperson for the Public Relations Task Force of Operation Ketupat 2026, Kombes Marupa Sagala, in his statement on Sunday. Overall, he continued, public security and order (kamtibmas) are reported to be safe and conducive, with no notable incidents. “There have been 292 traffic accidents recorded, comprising 8 fatalities, 60 serious injuries, 489 minor injuries, and material losses exceeding Rp 206 million,” he revealed. Marupa urged the public to prioritise safety during travel, including while holidaying during the Lebaran break. Indonesian police specifically advised those planning to visit water-based tourist spots such as beaches, rivers, or swimming pools. “We remind managers and the public to always consider carrying capacity and prioritise safety, so that tourism activities can proceed safely and comfortably,” he stated. Marupa encouraged the public to schedule their return trips to avoid vehicle build-ups. “The public is also urged to take advantage of the work from anywhere or WFA policy, allowing return journeys to be conducted gradually and not all at once,” he said. Additionally, the government is providing incentives in the form of toll fee discounts applicable from 26 to 27 March 2026. This policy is expected to help the public manage travel times more efficiently and reduce density. Indonesian police predict the peak of the Lebaran return flow will occur on 24 March and 28 to 29 March 2026. At the end of his statement, Marupa also extended Eid al-Fitr greetings to the public and hoped that the homecoming and return journeys would proceed safely and smoothly. “We wish everyone a happy family reunion on this Eid al-Fitr occasion. May your travels be safe, smooth, and full of joy,” he concluded.
