2 Million Indonesians Fall Victim: These 15 Apps Are the Gateway for M-Banking Thieves
Technological advancements in digital finance are a double-edged sword. On one hand, they simplify financial transactions, but on the other, they create vulnerabilities for cybercriminals to drain people’s bank accounts.
The latest report from cybersecurity firm McAfee has revealed shocking findings. As many as 15 dangerous apps have been detected infiltrating the Google Play Store and downloaded by millions of users worldwide, including in Indonesia.
These apps are known to act as ‘backdoors’ for hackers to steal personal data and access victims’ mobile banking (m-banking) services. In total, the apps on this blacklist have been installed more than 8 million times.
“Spy Loan” Tactics and Fake Online Loans
McAfee states that the majority of these apps masquerade as fake online loan providers (pinjol) or what is known as Spy Loans. To attract victims, the perpetrators offer enticing promises of low interest rates, lightning-fast processes, and very easy requirements.
Their modus operandi is quite sophisticated. The apps use visual designs, logos, and names that mimic official financial institutions to appear credible. Moreover, these syndicates aggressively promote their apps through advertisements on various social media platforms.
Once the app is installed, users are prompted to grant extensive permissions, including access to contacts, photo galleries, and short messages (SMS). This is where the trouble begins. The sensitive data is then siphoned to the perpetrators’ servers and used to intimidate victims or hack into banking accounts.
Targeting Users in Indonesia
Of particular concern, Indonesia is one of the main targets alongside regions in South America and Africa. From the 15 dangerous apps, at least three specifically target the Indonesian market and have been downloaded by around 2 million local users.
Cybercriminals typically use the stolen personal data to extort victims with fictitious bills or exorbitantly inflated interest rates. If victims do not pay, the perpetrators do not hesitate to carry out digital terror using the data they have obtained.
