Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) served 2,953 passengers with disabilities who utilised the reduction fare during January to June 2026. This figure represents a 200.41% increase compared to the same period in 2025, which recorded 983 passengers.

In the first six months of 2026, the number of beneficiaries of the disability fare reduction also surpassed the total for the entirety of 2025, which was 2,648 passengers. This means that by the end of June 2026, there were 305 more beneficiaries, or an 11.52% increase over the total for the previous year.

Behind these figures lie thousands of journeys, each with a different meaning for the passenger. Some travel for medical treatment, work, education, to attend an opportunity, visit parents, or return home where family awaits.

For passengers with disabilities, a journey can begin with longer considerations. They need to ensure access to the station, the readiness of facilities, ease of moving between places, and the availability of assistance when needed. Therefore, the opportunity to travel more comfortably and affordably can provide the courage to leave home, carry out activities, and maintain closeness with loved ones.

KAI Vice President Corporate Communication Anne Purba stated that the increase in beneficiaries shows that more people with disabilities are aware of and using their right to more affordable travel fares.

“A total of 2,953 passengers with disabilities utilised the reduction fare in the first half of 2026. Each number represents a person heading somewhere with hope and a meaningful reason. There may be parents waiting for their child to come home, families waiting to reunite, or someone striving to seize an opportunity for their future,” said Anne.

KAI provides a 20% fare reduction for passengers with disabilities on all train service classes. This fare was introduced for departures starting 17 September 2023, coinciding with National Transportation Day.

Persons with disabilities eligible for the fare reduction are those who experience long-term physical, intellectual, mental, and/or sensory limitations. These conditions may create barriers to interacting with the environment and participating fully and effectively based on equal rights.

Anne explained that trains play a role in connecting people with family, work, education, healthcare services, and various life opportunities. This role must be carried out with services that understand that each passenger has different conditions and travel needs.

“An inclusive journey begins when someone feels accepted, valued, and not left to face difficulties alone. We hope this fare reduction helps more passengers with disabilities travel with confidence, because they have the same right to come, go, meet, learn, work, and maintain relationships with family,” said Anne.

Based on station facility data compiled by KAI, accessible toilets are available at 56 major passenger stations. Other support for priority users includes guiding blocks, wheelchairs or stretchers, staff assistance, health services, and travel information provided by staff and passenger information displays at stations equipped with these facilities.

The availability of facilities and staff assistance is an important part of the travel experience for passengers with disabilities. A wheelchair available when needed, a staff member helping to give directions, or easily accessible travel information can reduce the worries of passengers and their families.

For families, peace of mind often comes from knowing that their loved ones can travel safely. For passengers with disabilities, simple kindness can also send a message that they are accepted as equal members of public spaces.

“Trains carry many human stories. We want every passenger with a disability to feel that their journey is just as important. They arrive with purpose, struggle, and hope that deserves respect,” Anne continued.

How to Obtain the Disability Fare Reduction

Passengers with disabilities can obtain the fare reduction by registering at the station customer service during operational hours, with the following conditions:

  1. Registration must be completed at least H-2 before the train departure schedule.

  2. Passengers must bring an original certificate from a hospital or community health centre doctor stating that the passenger is a person with a disability.

  3. The certificate is valid for life.

  4. Passengers must show their original ID card during registration.

  5. Registration only needs to be done once and is valid for subsequent bookings.

  6. The registration process can be represented by another person by bringing the original certificate, original ID card, and a passport photo of the passenger to be registered.

  7. The 20% reduction applies to all service classes.

  8. During boarding and on-train checks, passengers must show their original ID card or original disability certificate.

  9. The disability fare reduction is not valid for special fares and Priority, Imperial, Panoramic, Luxury Sleeper, and other tourist train services.

Once the data is registered, passengers can book tickets through KAI’s official sales channels.

“We invite families, companions, and the community to help convey this information to persons with disabilities in their respective environments. Information regarding the disability fare reduction can be accessed through the Access by KAI feature on the KAI Access application,” Anne concluded.
