2,834 high-risk prisoners transferred to Nusakambangan
The Director General of Corrections at the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, Mashudi, stated that as of June 2024, a total of 2,834 high-risk inmates have been transferred to maximum and super-maximum security correctional institutions on Nusakambangan, Central Java.
‘Currently, a total of 2,834 high-risk inmates have been moved to Nusakambangan during the leadership of the Minister of Immigration and Corrections, Agus Andrianto,’ Mashudi said in a statement in Jakarta on Monday.
Mashudi explained that the purpose of these transfers is to provide rehabilitation and security that aligns with the objectives of the correctional system, which is to foster independence among inmates and ensure they recognise their mistakes before eventually reintegrating into society.
The most recent transfer took place in the early hours of Monday, involving 134 inmates moved from various correctional facilities to Nusakambulating. The high-risk inmates transferred in this latest batch originated from four regions: 36 from Riau, 33 from North Sumatra, 32 from Jambi, and 33 from Lampung.
Mashudi noted that the transfer process proceeded smoothly in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), led by the Director of Internal Security along with teams from regional offices, Brimob, Sabhara, the regional police (Polda), and the city police (Polresta).
The 134 inmates transferred on Monday morning were placed across five correctional facilities in Nusakambangan, namely Lapas Kelas II A Karang Anyar, Lapas Kelas II A Besi, Lapas Kelas II A Gladakan, Lapas Kelas II A Narkotika, and Lapas Kelas II A Ngasemen. ‘Alhamdulillah, the transfer process went smoothly. They arrived in Nusakambangan at approximately 00:30 WIB this morning,’ Mashudi added.
