2,681 Red and White Flags Flown at Mount Galunggung Crater Break MURI Record

A total of 2,681 red and white flags flown at the crater rim of Mount Galunggung in Linggajati Village, Sukaratu District, Tasikmalaya Regency, West Java, have successfully broken the Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI) record. The flag display was the largest in Tasikmalaya, surpassing the previous record set at Mount Ceremai in Kuningan.

Participants from various institutions gathered at the crater rim, including the Tasikmalaya regent and deputy regent, the assistant to the Tasikmalaya city administration, Kodim 0612 Tasikmalaya, the Indonesian Air Force, Tasikmalaya city and regency police, Brimob, BPBD, Satpol PP, Kesbangpol, OJK, Bank Indonesia, hotel representatives, nature lovers, university students, school pupils and local residents. Participants walked up 620 steps and held a flag ceremony, raising the flags and singing ‘Padamu Negeri’.

MURI Customer Relations Manager Lutfi Syah Pradana said the display of 2,681 red and white flags carried by thousands of participants to the crater rim of Mount Galunggung had successfully broken the MURI record. The previous record of 1,945 flags was set at Mount Ceremai.

‘We verified that the 81st Independence Day activity involving the flying of red and white flags in Tasikmalaya successfully broke the MURI record at the crater rim of Mount Galunggung. The previous record was held at Mount Ceremai in Kuningan, and Tasikmalaya has now flown the most red and white flags,’ Lutfi Syah Pradana said on Monday (17/8/2026).

Meanwhile, Perhutani KPH ADM Danu Prasetyo said the flag display carried out by various groups at the crater rim of Mount Galunggung was highly enthusiastic, as everyone together demonstrated national defence in commemorating Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day. He added that, given the love for the country and Perhutani, there is a commitment to always keep the forest sustainable.

‘Mount Galunggung is a Perhutani area and we are committed to protecting the forest. Do not litter and sustainability must be maintained. The flag display was carried out by the regional government including various elements of the TNI and Polri,’ he said.

Tasikmalaya Regent Cecep Nurul Yakin said the display of 2,681 red and white flags at the crater rim of Mount Galunggung broke the MURI record, and that Galunggung has a long history because its surroundings provide life for communities in the city and regency of Tasikmalaya.

‘Mount Galunggung provides life for the community because this place delivers a message: let us keep nature sustainable, and the flag display represents the integrity of the Indonesian nation. The people must unite and not be divided. Unity is the key, strengthen unity and Tasikmalaya for Indonesia,’ he said.
