2.5-Metre King Cobra Evacuated from Behind Resident's Home in Mambang, Tabanan

A king cobra was found behind a resident’s home in Banjar Mambang Celuk Kaja, Mambang Village, Selemadeg Timur District, Tabanan, Bali. The snake was identified as female with a body length of 2.5 metres.

The chairwoman of the Asih Tabanan Reptile Foundation, Ni Putu Astridayanti, said the snake was discovered by the owner of a field located behind his house on Thursday evening (27/8). According to her, the venomous snake was subsequently evacuated to prevent it from endangering nearby residents.

“Four officers were dispatched to the location to handle the snake. After it was successfully secured, the female king cobra was evacuated from the site to the shelter at the Asih Tabanan Reptile Foundation,” Astridayanti explained.

Based on information from the evacuation team, the snake is suspected not to have been alone. The landowner had previously spotted another snake in the vicinity. However, officers were only able to evacuate the one female snake.

“It is likely that this snake was mating. The male fled and entered a cave or hiding burrow,” Astrid added.

Astrid said the team is still working to confirm the whereabouts of the other snake, which is believed to be around the cave area. She is also coordinating with residents so that they immediately report if they see another snake.

The appearance of a king cobra in a residential area has drawn attention because the snake is known to have highly dangerous venom. Residents are urged not to attempt to catch or approach the snake and to immediately contact parties capable of carrying out an evacuation.

Astrid also reminded residents to remain alert to the appearance of snakes, particularly in areas of undergrowth, holes, or caves that could potentially serve as hiding places for snakes.
